August: What I Read

This month I made a miraculous discovery:  AUDIOBOOKS ARE AMAZING.  I know.  Welcome to the 90s.  But seriously.

I was getting bored with the podcasts I listen to (which is ok because Ben and I are debuting our very own podcast next weekish), and it was hard to motivate myself to exercise and listen to them.  But!  I had a random $106 iTunes credit, so I used it for books books books and got hooked.  unfortunately, iTines books are expensive and Audible.com only gives you a book a month for $14.95, and that seemed too rich for my blood because I go through about 3 books a week.  But then!  I realized my library has the Overdive app, and I can listen to library books FOR FREE.  You all know I am really committed to borrowing and donating some the $$ I would have spent on books back to my library, so I was thrilled to find this free library option.  If you haven't, check to see if your library does the same thing because it's AWESOME.

(Ironically, I am about to buy an iTunes book right now because I am on 10 (literally) wait lists for titles and finished my book yesterday).

Without further ado, my August reading and listening list:

(One more thing-- I am a fast reader and the pace of the audiobook format was driving me nuts until I realized I could control the speed.  Now I listen to books double-time, and it's much better).

11.  Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett:  I didn't like this book, but Goodreads assures me that most people do.

10.  The Singles Game by Lauren Weisberger:  No Devil Wears Prada but fortunately no Revenge Wears Prada, either.

9.  Behind Closed Doors by BA Paris:  CREEPY thriller.  I listened to it and loved the narrator.  You have to suspend your disbelief and be OK with hating the main character a little bit.

8.  The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider:  Loved this YA and bonus-- the main character did debate! Harry and I listened to it in the car on the way to my parents' house.

7. Before the Fall by Noah Hawley:  This was a great, fast read-- an excellent pool read to cap off summer.

6.  Heroes of the Frontier by Dave Eggers:  RIVETING.  I read it so fast, and I was worried almost the whole time.

5.  Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks:  This was sad and lovely and ultimately hopeful.

4.  My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante: WOW!  I listened to this one while I exercised and I can't wait for the next one!  (I have a hold on it, but there are 3 people ahead of me and from what I can tell this week, the holds move SO SLOWLY).  I am late to this party, but believe the hype about this trilogy.

3.  You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott:  LOVED this thriller about competitive gymnasts.

2.  Truly, Madly Guilty by Liane Moriariy:  Another audiobook-- this one has a FANTASTIC narrator.  And I LOVE Liane Moriarty!  If you haven't read her you really should.
