The idea of a 23 for 2023 list seems a little overwhelming-- that's SO MANY THINGS, and 23 is a prime number, so I can’t even, like, group them or use a smaller factor or something. BUT ALSO, there are THINGS I want to DO.
I **think** I want to switch to e-books. I KNOW. I cannot even believe I am saying this either. BUT!! I am not very comfortable reading in bed since I have started wearing reading glasses. Something about the angle I am at while also holding a book-- ugh. I think a Kindle would help with this. Also! I HAVE SO MANY BOOKS-- I really don't need to accumulate more. And!! It would be SO NICE to have immediate access to library books. PLUS!! Think how easy it would be to bring a book everywhere I go.
BUT-- I love books. LOVE them-- the way they feel, smell, etc. AND! I kind of NEED to go to the library so that I remember to take Minnie. If I wasn't constantly picking up holds, I might not remember to go.
Another thing I **might** want to focus on next year is my nails. I am pretty good at getting pedicures on the regular, even though I never feel like I have time for them. I almost never ever get manicures, though, and maybe that's something I want to try? Like, can I go a whole year with manicured nails?
BEING ON TIME TO BABY ACTIVITIES is something I want to get better at.
Home improvements:
- I really was a dumpster so we can just RID OURSELVES OF JUNK and maybe finish a storage room as a den for Harry to use as a man cave. There’s actually a moving service in town that will haul your stuff away and decide what to toss, what to donate, what to recycle, and I think, actually, that is what I want.
- CARPET. WE MUST GET NEW CARPET my goodness.
- Update Dorothy’s bedroom/switch Minnie to a toddler bed/redecorate my room/ get the boys beds before one of them crashes through the top bunk and kills the other one
- OR NONE OF THESE AND WE JUST MOVE.
My pedicure buddy would def be up for a mani-centered goal
I am 100% team e-books. I rarely read a physical book. But I love that with e-books, you always have access to them on your phone or kindle. So I will read while waiting in a doctor's office, etc, without having to lug a big book around. I also prefer to not hold a heavy book while reading. That is especially true when I have RA flares because they almost always happen in my hands! So holding a book hurts - which makes me sound like a senior citizen! We have a routine of going to the library every Saturday morning before gymnastics so we still get there weekly even though we are not picking up holds for me. So I bet if you were able to make some sort of routine of taking Minnie there, you'd still get there often! We typically check out like 20+ books every time we go and our library has wonderful toys that the boys love playing with.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Libby is super easy to use once you get the hang of it. I have my library card and my husband's on there so I can have 30 holds. I'll probably get a library card for our 5yo soon so I can use his ebook holds, too! Give me alllll the holds! :) I also like that you can always defer an ebook hold so you never run into the problem of having more books to read than you can get through during the hold period.
I LOVE Libby-- I only use it for audio books right now, but it would be lovely to have book books, too.
Delete"Comfort" or "ease" maybe.
ReplyDeleteE-Reader
Arrive on time
Schedule manicures
Enhance the house
I have never thought of combining a word of the year with my goals-- I LOVE this idea-- thank you!
DeleteFor a while after my son was born I switched almost exclusively to ebooks. First it was convenient while nursing, then he was a grabby toddler and ripped up a couple of my library books, then it was good for immediate gratification during lock down. However! I had to make a conscious switch back to more physical books as I was mostly using the Kindle app on my phone. My kid just saw me on my phone all the time, didn’t register with him that I was reading books. He was what they call a reluctant independent reader, so we worked hard as a family to develop more obvious reading habits and model our family values.
ReplyDeleteYour older kids already know you as a reader and it sounds like you would be likely to read on an actual Kindle, so that may not be relevant. But I really had to work to change my habits and impress upon my son how much I was reading and not scrolling (though there’s plenty of that, too!).
My kids generally are not readers, even though I read ALL OF THE DARN TIME. Maybe the e-reader will appeal to them, too?
DeleteI love ebooks and adore my kindle but it hasn’t replaced physical books. I think you will find a good balance.
ReplyDeleteThese all sound like good goals! I think focusing on your nails sounds like an enjoyable, low stress goal and I am all about those.
I love to pad my list with those kinds of goals.
DeleteI do an ebook/physical book combo. The ebook collection at our library is not extensive and we can only have ten books on hold at a time, so while I love reading my Kindle in bed, I also usually have a bunch of physical books checked out that I read when I'm not in bed.
ReplyDeleteI think setting 23 goals sounds ambitious, too! Maybe you should make finding 23 goals as a goal. Just go meta all the way.
Ha!! Love this
DeleteI'm getting a Kobo for Christmas. I have no idea what will happen - I have been so staunching paper books for so long, but I can see the appeal of digital copies and it would make it SO much easier to read in bed and to take books along on vacation/for travel...
ReplyDeleteLike so many others have commented - I think I'll end up with a mix of both.
I am not a moderator, so I am afraid the switch will make me eliminate books from my life because that's how I roll
DeleteI was reluctant to go the e-book route for a long time, but you know what? It's just so damn convenient in so many ways.
