5 on a Friday: Cheap Tricks Edition

Just because I splurged ridiculously on face cream (why YES, I DID go back to Ulta and snag the night cream for half off— thank you for the comment on that post!) does not mean I have outgrown my love of cheap things. In fact, here are 5 things under $20 that I am loving right now.

1. I know I told you about it before, but THIS cuticle balm is THE BOMB (bomb/balm- I have had A Lot of coffee this morning)

2. THESE Eddie Bauer 4-piece jammies from Costco. I am in between a medium and s mall, and honestly BOTH sizes are awkward in their own way, but I still pick up a pack when I am buying groceries because I want to collect them all, and they are SO COMFY.

3. THESE Contigo water bottles from Target. 2 for 20 bucks?! Love that for me.

4. THIS salad bento. GOOD FOR SO MUCH MORE THAN SALADS (but also good for salads, too)

5. THIS pornographic hair wand. Stephany recommended it, and I delighted to click over and see that is in only $19.99. Amazing waves, so easy to use, AND I think it will be great for Dorothy’s curly dance ponytail. SO MUCH WINNING.

Tell me, what cheap accessory is making your life better these days?

  1. Two followup questions: Are the Contigo bottles see-through ('cos if I can't see the water level, they're useless to me). And is there a tutorial for the bubble wand? (I usually twist hair while wet for waves, but could absolutely do with an upgrade).

    1. Yes the bottles are see-through, which is something I need FOR SURE and didn't realize how much until I never drank my Hydroflask. The wand is so easy-- you just wrap around the bubbles for big waves and the places in between the bubbles for tighter curls.

  2. What is with the specialty curling products that are...interesting looking? I ordered (but ended up returning) a Chi Spin n' Curl and someone I know nicknamed it the v*gina curler (for obvious reasons if you google a picture of this thing). That bubble wand curler looks great though. I hate curling my hair, but it is NOT enough to just scrunch and dry because I get so much frizz and these annoying waves that are NOT cute. This might be the answer?

    My cuticles are a disaster.

    1. OMG I JUST GOOGLED THAT CURLER. HILARIOUS. Very Georgia O'Keefe.

  3. I really hate putting lotion and cuticle cream on my hands (so greasy!), but I need to! I have like five jars of cuticle cream and I just need to be better at using it.

I suspect you are more adept at doing hair than you let on. I have never had an experience with a hair wand that has not led to me looking like an idiot. Even the so-called idiot proof ones are too hard for me. I don't really have any sense of spatial awareness, so it's hard/impossible for me to tell what's going on in the back of my head and do I turn it clockwise or counterclockwise and there are so many decisions and it's all so hard? I think you're underselling your talents.

    1. I am great with a straightener, but I absolutely cannot use it to do waves. I can curl someone else's hair really well, but my own has ALWAYS been terrible. I think the magic of this one is that there is no clamp, which is where things go off the rails for me. Do you section off your hair first? I use scrunchies to separate mine into about 6 sections and then curl one section at a time, starting in the back (I divide the back into 2, one high and one low, and I start with the low section). I would say each section of hair is about 3 separate curls.

  4. Woohoo! I'm glad the bubble wand curler is working out for you! It really makes the process foolproof. But it is most definitely pornographic, HA.
