Saturday! We got like 14 inches of snow.
WHAT. WHY? (Don’t answer that. The answer is obviously climate change).
I went outside to help Jack shovel the bottom of the driveway so we could move the cars and access the snowblower while Harry slept like a prince and Coop went down the street to shovel for friends on vacay.
Dorothy joined us and said, “Oh! Mom! Is this your first time shoveling snow, too?”
Knee-jerk me was like, “OMG Dorothy! THIS is why cis whites women are such problematic feminist allies for BIPOC— THE PATRIARCHY WORKS FOR US, especially if we are conventionally attractive, which is a whole other can of problems.”
Seriously, you guys. Blurts like these are how I told Harry about sex at the mall.
But! We had a great conversation about imperialist white supremacist heteronormative capitalist patriarchy and cleared the driveways.
(And really. I did not get married to shovel my own snow, Faustian bargains and all that).
So. Much. SNOW! I think/hope we're done for the winter?! We have mostly bare grounds now and I am not upset about this!
ReplyDeleteSO MUCH SNOOOOOOOOOOOOW.
DeleteWell, you know how to make shoveling interesting! I like how Harry was sleeping "like a prince" while all this was going on (yep, he's in high school!) All this talk of snow is strange to me- we're possibly getting up to 90 this week. And yet we live in the same country!? Anyway- I hope that was the last snow of the season for you.
ReplyDeleteI am not very excited about a hot summer, but I AM excited about the END OF SNOW
DeleteSorry about your late March snow--14 inches seems like a lot at any time fo the year! Love your intellectual aside to Dorothy--may blurts like these make the future better. ♥️
ReplyDeleteRead the sex ed piece you linked; your recs are terrific. May I suggest _Sex is a Funny Word_ by Cory Silverberg too? https://www.corysilverberg.com/sex-is-a-funny-word
And lastly, your mom is super cool!! I love that generation of feminists!
Ooooh— thanks for the rec!
DeleteOMG! Finally a snow storm that missed us! That is so much snow and that is so depressing in late March! I feel like we still have another storm like this coming before winter is truly over. We still have over a foot of snow on the ground in our yard. I'm not eager to see more but my husband is actually cheering for us to break the record. I think we are 15" away or so? So it's not out of the question that we'll break the record.
ReplyDeleteLove how you took this opportunity as a teaching moment for Dorothy!
Oddly, I kind of like shoveling. I find it really satisfying because I can see the fruits of my labor. Phil does all of our snow blowing and then I usually shovel the places he can't get to with the snow blower (which is A LOT since we live on a hill).
Our back yard will be snowy until May— NO SUN. I agree, actually— shoveling is zen the same way washing dishes is zen
DeleteIt was a DUMB SATURDAY and I'm so angry. However, it did put Madison in record-breaking snow amounts, so I guess all those people who were saying it was going to be a "mild winter" in December have to eat their words now. I don't know why this reassures me that all this snow was worth it.
ReplyDeleteI do hope we're done with snow. Fingers crossed.
We have a terrible mayor who has given us GRAVEL STREETS (WHAT) and never ever plows, so school has been out a bunch. Otherwise, though, the snow has been really conveniently timed for my life, so I have loved it.
DeleteI don't mind the snow BUT I live in an apartment. Someone shovels for me. I did make a stupid move and go out in it (briefly) and then thought better and went home again. Here's hoping next week's forecast actually holds...
