Shopping with the world’s pickiest 10 year-old

Dorothy needed spring/early summer clothes. NEEDED THEM. But! She is THE WORST when it comes to clothes. What she likes on the hanger is NOT what she likes on her body, so just grabbing her size and going home doesn’t work. She has to try stuff on, and she has to kind of move around in it, sit down, etc. It’s also completely impossible for me to predict what she will like, and sometimes, stuff that looks DARLING doesn’t feel right to her. So. I cant just buy stuff for her and surprise or anything like that. She HAS to try it on, pick it out, etc.

So. Last weekend, she and Minnie and I ventured to Target and Old Navy (plus Carter’s for jammies because they are CLASSICS) so she could find some things she didn’t hate to mix into the rest of her fast fashion wardrobe.

I was a grinch and refused to buy more leggings (she HAS leggings and also does not need more pants right now— the 80-degree days last month made me realize how lacking her wam weather stash really was) or any of the cardigans she picked out (SUMMER. THINK SUMMER), but, otherwise I didn’t give her any limits or suggestions, and it was really fun to see what she picked (which, for the record, was not necessarily anything that would have found its way into my cart).

She really likes the Art Class stuff at Target right now. I was able to buy her biker shorts, 2 over-sized retro T shirts, and 2 cute little ribbed dresses the other day on a whim, and she liked them all (THIS NEVER HAPPENS). I was not surprised when she went to the Art Class section first thing and instantly found this flared ribbed cotton skirt with built-in shorts and this cute little Malibu Barbie tank top.
We actually came home, ate lunch, put Minnie down for a nap, did a try-on session (even though she also tried on everything at the store), realized she hated a romper she bought (she tried it on in white and loved it, but it was see-through, so she switched it for a lavender one and then hated the way that color felt (WHAT)), went BACK TO FREAKING TARGET, switched the romper for this adorable maxi (my fave thing she bought), picked up our grocery order, and came home to snap this pic— phew!
Old Navy skirt and top— remember this print because you’ll see it again. Also HER MALL BANGS in this pic
This is a Target All in Motion outfit— I love the cute tank top (it has a little liner and is a tiny bit cropped) and the high waisted pleated skirt with built-in shorts.

Old Navy dress
All in Motion spandex dress with built-in biker shorts
Best face ever? Art Class tee she has already worn twice and Cat and Jack jean skirt with the cutest little paper bag waist that I would wear in my size, 90s mall hair again.
Old Navy dress that she insisted sizing up in
Will she be able to wear these clothes without losing her ever loving mind in the morning? STAY TUNED.

Minnie only wanted a strawberry-printed dress from Old Navy and this nightie, although I also bought her a super cute princess t-shirt (she saw it at the check out line and said OH NO NOT THAT SHIRT. I NO WANT THAT SHIRT) and a dress to wear to her THREE REX bday party at the end of the summer.

MINNIE IS GOING TO BE 3 AT THE END OF THE SUMMER. WHAT.

  2. How is she with shoes? I used to be sooo picky when it came to shoes and my parents used to get so frustrated with me. Turns out I am equally picky as an adult and my husband is constantly frustrated with me.

  3. this is why I am sooooo happy the kids' school has uniforms. I am less happy that in 6-8th grade the kids (at same school) get 'free dress'. Will be in this boat come fall!

  4. How discerning of Dorothy--she has great taste. (I too would wear the heck out of that Art Class line, honestly.)

  6. Dorothy especially looks like you when she has her hair up. Kids clothes are way more cute than they were back when we were kids. I don't like online shopping because brand sizes vary and I need to try things on and don't love having to order and then return stuff. So I kind of feel her on this a little bit. But I also hate shopping... My neighbor just dropped off a couple of bags of clothes that she doesn't wear anymore and I am for sure keeping 2 of the dresses. So that has helped my woefully sad wardrobe a bit. I'm getting rid of a ton of pre-kid stuff which makes me sad but I'd have to restrict my eating so much and it's not worth it.

    1. What about Stitch Fix? I usually need to try stuff on, but since the whole model of Stitch Fix is that returns are expected and easy, I really like it.

  7. So. Dang. Jealous. Of. Kid. Clothes. I wish I could shop in the kids' section at Target. I also wish I liked shopping and had Dorothy's sense of style. The kid certainly has it! (And goodness, she looks like you!)
