On one hand, we are staying up late waiting for our high school sophomore to be done at his fall play cast party.
On the other hand, our 3 year-old has a bad dream and needs to sleep in my bed at 4 am.
YIKES.
This past weekend, we enjoyed a robust mix of big and little-kid stuff.
First, though, another dance dress up day on Thursday:
Friday morning, Minnie reminded us that “hot chocolate” is her favorite thing about fall (even though she had never in her entire life had hot chocolate), and Dorothy asked for a cozy breakfast. Sooooo, I went with a high/low version of cozy breakfast, kind of like those IG outfit posts with $30 jeans and a $750 blazer. We did delicious homemade stovetop cocoa and cinnamon rolls from a tube (yay/**whomp whomp**)
Then it was the moment Minnie has been waiting for her whole life since she found out it was a thing: COSTUME DAY AT SCHOOL!!
Side note: Minnie’s beloved teacher was out sick, so they had a sub AND everyone looked different in costumes AND they were making witches’ brew for snack— so many changes. I left a very discombobulated group of 3 year olds (and did not look back because 3 hours of freedom goes FAST).
Friday night, Dorothy and I went with Harry to see Jack’s fall play (Rumors by Neil Simon). It was darling, and Jack played an excellent tough guy.
Saturday morning, Cooper scored four goals to open his hockey season, and we tagged along for excellent donuts
(Why yes, that IS a formal holiday dress from Costco, why do you ask?)
I went shopping (jeans! A sweater! A cute tunic! Ridiculous hot pink platform Mary Janes!) while Ben took one for the team and supervised pumpkin carving
The it was BEN’S turn to watch the play (with Coop who missed opening night for hockey practice)We planned to go out while Jack was at his cast party, but the party went from10-12 and most bars near us close at 11. SO GREAT **eye roll**.
We ended up dropping him off, going home to take showers and out on our pajamas, and then going back to get him. Harry was like oh cool I stayed home to babysit for that, and we agreed. And yet, sandwich parenting, you know??

ReplyDeleteJack looks like an irrepressibly fun guy despite being the "tough guy;" Minnie looks so delighted in her costume... Your kids are so cute! AND I hope there'll be pictures of those pink platform Mary Janes soon!
Deletethey were ridic, but IO sort of liked them. Are we IG friends? I took like 45 pics of my feet yesterday
DeleteI am here for fancy dresses. Seriously? I miss that SO much. I know it's gender stereotyped, but I loved dressing A up in fancy dresses. It was so fun. And now she basically hates dresses completely and *sob* that part of my life is OVER. And as much as I am not a "toddler" person, gah I do miss the little pigtails and hairbows and fancy dresses that are downright beautiful (seriously, they make some VERY awesome kids clothes these days).
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thanks for guest posting. It was SO much fun to read your answers <3
hank you for having me!! it was so fun
DeleteI read your guest post!!! You came up with some great answers to her questions.
ReplyDeleteOof, is all i have to say. Having a toddler and teenagers at the same time would be HARD. But- and it would be awesome. Love the photos of Minnie all excited for costume day! And I love the jackolanterns (especially the one vomiting...hahahaha!).
I hope you guys have a great Halloween!
thanks!! Halloween is my favorite, so the bar for fun is pretty high (LOL)
DeleteMan this was my parents life, too, since they had my baby sister when their oldest was 17! Abby was such a trooper and got drug around to so much stuff but it might have made her into an outgoing extrovert because she had to spend a lot of time around adults at basketball games and plays and such. She also seems to be incredibly flexible - like her husband is in the military and she just rolls w/ all the crazy changes they go through, like not knowing where they will live in 6 months. And maybe it's partially because she had to flex to 4 other kids schedules!
ReplyDeleteThe fancy dress is so much fun!!
I hope Minnie will grow up exactly like that!
DeleteI took want to see the pink platform Mary Janes.
ReplyDeletefear not-- I took a million pictures
DeleteAwwww your littles in their costumes!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis all sounds very exhausting but also tons of fun (except for the nightmare -- yikes).
I am going to spend the rest of the day contemplating how confused those poor three-year-olds must have been all day! That is a lot of Not Normal for a kiddo to handle!
THEY WERE SO BOTHERED.
DeleteYaaaaa, need pink shoe pics.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the Costco formal dress.
Love you leaving Minnie in a class full of strangers, freedom calls, buh-bye.
I miss the little stage even while loving the big stage, but I dunno man, it sounds really sweet but reallllly tiring.
I barely even hesitated, and other moms were on the ground saying reassuring things. I was like PEACE OUT BABY.
DeleteHi Sarah, I'm stopping by after reading your shelving book comment on Ali's blog. And I love this, so I'll be back. Very relatable stuff - except I don't have a 3 yo. My house is quiet at the moment. I'm home alone. Almost guaranteed that I'll forget to pick up my daughter at 6:30 from basketball, but I was there at 6 yesterday when she gave me the wrong time - so I think I'll count that for something. I love the Yoda costume and the unexplained formal wear at hockey. Hooray for sneaking out and enjoying some retail time. I just bought some Doc Martens on sale, and I'm just not sure. My 15 year old is horrified by them, but she'll only wear white sneakers. Off to read your interview at Elisabeth's blog.
