Random Word Wednesday: LIBRARY

One amazing perk of my new schedule is that I have plenty of time to take Minnie to the library. IF I WANT TO.

She insists on posing WITH MY STATUE FRIENDS every time we visit, so only a gd monster WOULDN’T want to take her, right?

I also have plenty of time to go to the freaking library BY MY FREAKING SELF to either grab books or even to set up shop and WORK THERE if I want to.

This is so exciting because it has been a hot second since either of these things were possible. Minnie and I have had a rough time consistently finding a time to go to the ‘brary. We had time between swimming and TLG, but then she leveled up in swim class, and our swim/gym day became an absolutely cluster. AND THEN YOU ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO GYM **sob**

BUT ALSO, I have really missed the absolute cozy quiet of the library and the ease of running in to grab my holds without a toddler along for the ride

(Side note: IS SHE A TODDLER, even, or are we firmly in preschooler territory?)

And! Cold and flu season plus little kid plus library equals ALL OF THE VIRUSES. Soooooo, going by myself sounds amazing. I think I am going to aim for Thursdays because that’s the day Tuesday new releases hit the walk-in shelf, and I should have the perfect amount of time to get a coffee somewhere or run home and switch laundry and be at the library the moment it opens. HEAVEN.

Also, Minnie has to put coins in the vortex funnel wishing well every single flipping time, so I need to allocate enough time for that little ritual, and sometimes, I just, erm, don’t want to, you know??

Today is #OneDayHH on Instagram, so I will be posting aaaaaall day (to my feed, like an animal). If you are on IG, join in-- such a fun way to document your every day and see how other people live their curated lives.

  1. That is so great that you have more time for the library, even if you had to give up something else for it! It is exciting that Minnie likes going and her little routines are very cute. I love that your one library day alone is still so chaotic (put in the laundry etc.) but the library visit will be such a pleasure! I love the library and spent many many hours there as a kid. Any time my Dad had work in town, I would wait for him there to pick me up and I have many fond memories that involve the library!

  2. Statue friend! I think Minnie is definitely on to something. Our library habit just didn't transfer when we moved to this city six years ago although I have several friends and old students who are librarians in the city-wide system. I should see about fixing that... next summer!

    1. I think middle-grade kids are just less in love with the library, so maybe the move wouldn’t have made a difference?

  3. I think you're firmly into preschooler territory now.
Love libraries and love visiting alone, though went yesterday with my 8-year-old and it was a blast.
I had never seen one of those coin vortexes until THIS YEAR. I was delighted.

Minnie in her dance costume is simply beyond adorable. Gah!

    1. UGH— I think you are right with preschool. Bummer (but for the first time ever, I do not feel like having another one)

  4. We love the library, too. I never go on my own unless I am picking up a hold that is expiring on the way home from work. We go on Saturday mornings before gymnastics. I know it's full of germs and such but I'm hoping the worst is behind us in terms of the virus train? We'll see.

    And I think 3 = toddler. 4 = preschooler in my book.

  5. Going to the library by myself is such a treat I allow myself. Occasionally I'll ask, on my way out the door, if my husband wants to come, but I want him to say NO because he ruins my vibe. I just want my library time to be my time, so I totally get what you mean about not wanting to have to do all the little rituals that come with other people! Especially other people with developing prefrontal cortexes!

  6. Ooooooh library time sans toddler is such a nice milestone to reach! Obviously the library is fun always, but when you are with a toddler it is mainly fun for THEM. I am not sad that long gone are the days of supervising my kid in the toy area or trying to get her to agree on a book or trying to get her to sit still for storytime.

    1. THE TOY AREA. Like, listen, I do not have the capacity to adjudicate a disagreement about a free train car, you know??

  7. I do vividly remember loving taking my kids places and also being absolutely giddy with freedom when I could go unencumbered.
The wishing well thing reminds me of how my kids always had to put coins in the dog statue for the CNIB at the grocery store, and then pet the fake dog. It was adorable.

  8. Since it's already 9:42 and I am only hearing about this IG challenge now, I guess I'm going to pass. But I want to take part! I want to! But I've been up for over five hours by this point so I feel like this has passed.
    Awww, library time! So sweet.
Just saw Allison's comment - my kids ALSO had to pet the fake dog and put the coins in for CNIB!

    1. Oh you should do it next year! Always a day in early November and so fun to observe. Some ppl do it on their stories, but I like the feed posts, although I need to remember to exclude them from my Chatbook subscription because I do not need a forever picture of my 9pm wine glass.

  9. It's funny that you mention this because every time I go to the library now (it's always by myself) and I see someone with a toddler... I'm so glad I'm not them! And I liked taking my kids to the library- but it feels so luxurious to go alone somehow. And btw how old is Minnie? I'm thinking she's a preschooler now!

  10. You know, I ran by the library the other day and thought I should really go into the library more often and not just use the digital library all the time. Bucket list item LOL

I have heard of OneDayHH on Instagram and can you believe I have never participated... and now it's already too late because half of today is over. Next time!!

  13. She sure is cute. I often take the kids I sit for to the library - especially when the weather is crappy. They have a great play area and we like a change of scenery. It has been awhile since I enjoyed just browsing at the library. I'm definitely more of an in and out type. Oh, but my library does have a very cool maker studio and I've found ways to create stuff there, which has been so awesome.

  14. I'm writing this AFTER One Day HH, but it was SO MUCH FUN to follow along on a day in your life!!! I really enjoyed it, and I hope you had fun posting throughout the day.

The one thing I rarely do these days is go and browse at the library. I usually just put books on hold and go right to the desk to pick them up when they're ready. My local branch isn't much to look at, but we have some other bigger branches that could be fun to peruse some day.
