To be fair, the adventure started at 5pm the day before the snow day when two things happened at about the same second: 1. School sent an email cancelling Tuesday classes on the basis of weather forecast models alone. 2. Ben had to step out of his car where he was idling on campus for pick up Cooper at diving practice so he could THROW UP. In the street. (When he felt better yesterday afternoon, he brought the scarf he was wearing into the laundry room to wash, carrying it in a plastic bag because he used it to wipe his face. HE WAS SO SICK).
Soooooo.
We planned on him being at work during our snow day with an overnight bag packed in case he couldn’t make it home and had to stay in a hotel. Instead, he was sequestered in our room doing unspeakable things to the bathroom.
**Yikes face**
I slept on the couch, and Minnie bellowed IT’S WAKED UP TIME at 6:24, the second her ok-to-wake clock turns green. She joined me, and we watch TV and the snow fall on her swing set in the back yard.
I went to the co-op for coffee last week and left with $100-worth of odds and end that fit in one single grocery bag— something the cashier marveled at for its efficiency but I was like dud e that’s not cute at all; inflation is the worst—and one of those things was buttermilk in a huge bottle that’s in date for WEEKS. All this is to say, we started our day with brown sugar buttermilk pancakes, customized to order:
Except for Harry, who just wanted cookie dough in Jack’s mini waffle maker.
Everyone cheerfully trashed the kitchen like it was NBD
Every counter was demolished, plus some of them ate at the table **eye roll** I was kind of grumbly, but they took Minnie downstairs to play, and I cleaned it up and made my own pancakes **chef’s kiss**
Minnie spent a little time drawing. You can see she always makes her tomato people look worried. Also— the scribbles are the letter “M,” and you can see a coupe of randomly placed attempts at “i”s as well.
We did that whole stereotypical thing where you spend forever getting ready to go sledding and then stay out for mere minutes. I think we went too early— we had really pointy snow and high winds early in the day, but the afternoon was still with the biggest snowflakes you can imagine. I tried to rally the troops to make a snowman, but everyone was over it by then.
We had from-scratch pizza for lunch— a meal and an activity! (I remembered to start the bread machine for dough before we left the house).
The afternoon was lovely and lazy. Harry and some friends went sledding (and a friend went into a newly frozen retention pond on purpose (??) so they all came home to get dry clothes and hang out in Harry’s room while chaos raged.) Dorothy talked to a dance friend on FaceTime for quite awhile. Jack and Minnie watched a bunch of Star Wars (Minnie loves all of the movies) with plenty of light saber fight breaks, and Cooper played Fortnite with hockey friends. Harry was mad briefly because we wouldn’t let him drive to pick up a friend who lives in an adjacent neighborhood, but we pointed out that his other neighborhood friends could not drive either, and neither could the kid he wanted to pick up. Eventually, his friend just walked over. I love that Harry had the confidence to think he could drive in a storm and that we would let him. Then he asked me to help him with the zipper on his jacket. LOL for days. That’s a 17 year-old in a nutshell.
Ben felt well enough to clean the bathroom, air out the bedroom, take a shower, and sit on the couch with Minnie while she played, so I went out to shovel. Jack did the first round, and Cooper and Harry did another, but it had been quite some time in between, so I spent 2 hours listening to a book and clearing the driveway and sidewalk. It was so nice to be outside, be active, and be alone. Ben joined the boys for round 3 with the snowblower after the snow finally stopped at 8pm, and he and Harry have big plans to do an early sweep before Ben leaves for work today. (Harry also went out the night before the storm while Ben was occupied being sick to get gas for the snowblower— he’s such a helper).
I LOVE SNOW DAYS so much.
We’re back to the grind today, and I hate driving on snow. Minnie’s class has been studying hibernation as part of the “cozy home” unit, and I joked with her teacher that we were going to operationalize those lessons. She was like see you in the spring, and I wish I could really just hunker down until it’s warm and green again.
Also! Cozy home! The sensory table has laundry stuff, and there’s a toddler bed with lots of babies in it, and the loft has a hot cocoa bar. It’s adorable and also low-key subversive. Even a couple kids ago, the preschool units were much more stereotypically boy-centered. BUT COZY IS FOR EVERYONE, and all kids should learn how to cultivate a cozy home. Laundry
is a
sensory delight, after all. Love it so much. (We actually put several preschool units into practice— pizza, cozy home, teddy bear picnic, etc— yesterday. Minnie has been set up to ace sow days).
Sorry you all are still getting sick in slow motion... but what a great snow day that checks every fun box!
ReplyDelete(And I will be laughing at the juxtaposition of your 17-year-old's demands for a while too.)
Slow motion is exactly right. Train wreck, etc
DeleteVomit - horrific
ReplyDeleteSnow days - can go either way
Pancakes - some of the best food on the planet.
We have a snow day today and the jury is still out on how I'll categorize it...
And I laughed so hard about the zipper. #Parenting
Your snow day looked so cozy!
DeleteThe snow just kept coming. We did a round of shoveling in the early afternoon and then at about 8pm. But just as we finished, it starting snowing AGAIN and so my husband had to shovel this morning while I walked the dog. And then we slid our way to work because the roads are just ice. *sigh* Winter has arrived.
ReplyDeleteOn the bright side, no one is puking in our house, the snow is beautiful, and the dog is living her best life. I'd say it's a mixed bag!
It really is beautiful!
DeleteLol at 17 year olds. Eve came home from kindergarten once and said "Tyler said all boys are stronger than girls. Then he asked me to open his SNACK container!"
ReplyDeleteWonderful snow day. Why have I never thought of listening to stuff while I shovel?
We had no snow for Christmas, which sucked, and now we have snow and rain, which sucks double. I wanted it then. I do not want it now. Sign me up for hibernation.
Love that story from Kindergarten. Hilarious!
DeleteHa! That’s a great kindergarten story. I agree- I wanted snow then, will for sure NOT want it in about 6 weeks.
DeleteOh gosh. I once puked while driving in a car alone. I stopped at Coach's work and he brought out a garbage bag and some paper towels to me. It never occurred to me that having to puke while driving and not having enough warning (or too much confidence, as in - IT'S FINE. I'LL BE HOME SOON) could be so awful.
ReplyDeleteThere was talk of a snowday here yesterday and it was the first day the 4 youngest were heading back to high school and junior high and I was VERY grateful we didn't end up with a snow day. I've done my fair share of celebrating those with hot chocolate, snowmen, and movies but I was not mentally up for it yesterday after weeks with the 'I stare because I'm new here and I am taking it all in' foster girls. (not bad behavoir, but being stared at constantly IS unnerving). I needed a schedule.
Love the way your day was spent. So relatable, especially the high school demands/needs/helpful moments. With so many kids here, esp so many willing boys, I don't shovel often, but when I have, I've been surprised at how much I embrace the quiet.
MORE than your fair share of snow days!!
DeleteOh know! Ben got sick! Gah! I hope you stay healthy. Those stomach bugs are brutal!
ReplyDeleteWe have yet to really get a serious snowfall. We just barely have a snow covering right now. We will get little bits and bobs of snow and then it gets crazy cold this weekend. The high at my parents this week is something like -3F. Good Lord.
I am glad you enjoyed your snow day for the most part!
That’s our forecasted high next week, and I am dreading it!!!
DeleteI love a snow day! And we always do snow day pancakes as well. But pizzas from scratch with homemade dough is leveling up - maybe I'll try that if we get a snow day this winter. But also, that sounds like so many people shoveling so many times - how much snow did you get?! Your description of 17 year olds - yup, exactly. And sign me up for that preschool curriculum, please. Sounds delightful!
ReplyDeleteThe pizza is so easy in the bread machine, and the kids all like playing with it
DeleteOh Ben! Oh no! I hope he is the end of the vom in your family.
ReplyDeleteLOL to Harry and his driving confidence/zipper needs.
Cozy home! That sounds amazing in so many ways.
I have started replacing hand towels like 4 times a day in all the bathrooms, so maybe????
Deleteahhhhhhh vomit!
ReplyDeleteYour day sounds SO fun. M went driving once to drop friends off in the middle of a blizzard (blizzard started AFTER he left) and it was a pretty stressful experience, given he was a new driver. And it was my van.
Scary driving sitch!! I mean, I get that they have to learn how to drive in bad weather, but that doesn’t make me like it.
DeleteI love your 17 year old car/zipper thing. Hilarious.
ReplyDeletePancakes are the perfect snow day food. I haven't had a snow day in MANY years, when we lived in Philly, we got 3 feet one night, which shut the city down for a few days. Even then, I lived in an apartment building and didn't have to shovel anything. In other words, I've never had to adult in the snow.
Sorry about the barf situation, that blows. (HA)
LOL at blows
DeleteThis does sounds really fun. Pancakes... drawing... pizza making... watching movies... playing in the snow (briefly). I could get behind a good snow day every once in a while!
ReplyDeleteHope Ben is all better now. Sheesh, that part sounded terrible.
Oh man - vomiting on the side of the road. That's awful!!
ReplyDeleteYour snow day looks like so much fun. Chaotic with all those kids, but fun! (Meanwhile, I wore short sleeves today, lol.)
