End of an era

I have been driving a minivan since MAY of 2011. Not THE SAME minivan, fortunately. There was a black Sienna. A red Sienna. A gray Sienna. And a blue Honda. I LOVED the minivan at first— I was so jazzed about arm rests and cup holders and Bluetooth (lolz) and a USB port. The sliding doors have been dreamy for 13 years, and the amount of ROOM for both people and stuff is unbeatable.

But! On Friday! I LEFT MY MINIVAN ERA BEHIND.

It’s a Honda Pilot, and I love it!! I wanted to get it in white, but the exact one I wanted was only available in red, black, or blue, and we are currently a BLUE CAR FAM, so my hands were tied.

Also! The bow makes me laugh because I bought this car by myself for myself.
But, I mean, WI is a marital property state, so it’s not exactly a feminist statement.

(I also did not take another dress pic, so that’s my day 4 teaching lewk as well)

A couple of funny things:
1. If you are a woman at a car place with 2 little girls looking at cars, you will get help FAST. I looked at different trim packages with Dorothy and Minnie climbing in and out of SUVs, and it was so easy breezy.  I made a call on features and had the process started in less than 40 minutes.
2. I then COMPLETELY CHANGED MY MIND about which one I wanted and left my poor sales guy a voicemail at the crack of dawn swapping cars real fast.
3. As part of the process, I needed to give the guy my current car registration, ONLY I DID NOT HAVE ONE because WE HAVE NOT RENWED SINCE 2022. Erm. Also, it is not super intuitive to renew your plates online in WI, but I DID IT.
4. The actual signing and driving part was also SO FAST. I looked at cars on Tuesday. Called to change my mind about which car on Wednesday, and went in to turn in my van and drive my shiny new one off the lot on Thursday afternoon. Harry took Minnie to her swim lesson, and I met everyone at the pool. THAT WAS IT. The price I was quoted was the literal price, no last-minute surprises. It was a dream.

The kids think the tailgate is super fun because you can open with a kick motion (pretty sure the van did this too, but whatevs).

Minnie lurves new car smell
Coop likes the moonroof and also the intercom which is ridiculous and lets him make announcements to people in the back. And he always says THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING.

I really like the option to take out the second row middle seat! It is currently living in my workout dungeon so I can use the stow space in the trunk for other things because I miss my minivan storage capacity already. I also am having fun playing with where everyone should go. I moved Minnie to the way back for our trip to dance nats.

We are back to NO EATING IN THE CAR after waving goodbye to the minivan of Goldfish crumbs and sand, but, still, I wanted to take the kids out for bedtime ice cream after Minnie went down and Ben got home.

And then, I pulled my 5-hour-old car out of the garage AND SCRATCHED THE LIVING FUCK OUT OF IT.

Sorry for the f-bomb but it is the only way to describe the sheer FUCKERY of FUCKING UP your BRAND FUCKING NEW CAR.

Ben tossed the kids in his car and drove the ice cream party to Menards on the way home for all manner of rubbing compound.

AND HE FUCKING FIXED IT, you guys.

In suit pants and slides!

Oh shit, though! Did I mention that the car has side cams and sensors? **face palm**

BTW, I have no evidence of existing as a person on Friday except a couple of selfies, so my teaching outfit 5/27 is… underphotographed. Best one I got:
It was a tiered midi t-shirt dress from Old Navy that I randomly found in a petite at my store!!

And also, dress 6/27 from Monday, the most awkward picture IN THE WORLD just for you guys

  1. Snazzy!

Also, the scratch. GAHHHHH. I am terrified of getting new things for just this very reason. I've never had a brand-new vehicle, but I do love the new car smell!!

  2. Oh, that's funny- this is why I don't get brand new cars! I would be terrified of scratching it or getting a dent. Glad Ben was able to restore it to brand-new! It looks awesome.

  3. I hit a pole in a parking garage several weeks after getting our Rav4 last fall but it was not something that could be buffed out. I think the damage was around $3-5k. I blocked it out. Oof that was not a good day in our house when I had to tell Phil what happened. I don't know how I did it because the car beeps when you are close to something but I was all blissed out from a massage on a shouldless day and I guess I just blocked out the beeping? Sigh.

I am glad you had a good buying experience, though. I loathe buying cars. Phil completely handled it last time and it still took hours once he got the dealership to get the car we had ordered. My sister shopped for a new car last weekend because they sold her car before they drove across the country. She said it was a terrible process though and that finally she was like - we have 2 young children who need naps so I am leaving and the sales guys followed her out of the dealership (their kids are 1 and 3). They would not answer their questions directly and she was so over it. So she ordered a new hybrid sienna which will arrive in 2-4 weeks. So she'll taking over your minivan spot in the momma universe while you convert to an SUV. My parents had a pilot for many years and loved it! Now they have downsized to a Highlander since they don't need that much space as a retired couple.

    1. If I were keeping my minivan life, that would be my top choice! a great van! I hear you on the car damage-- it happens, and you are a grown up with a job so you can fix it-- but Ben makes me feel bad too

  4. Exciting! I left my minivan life as well, but last summer. I got a Subaru outback and I love it so much.

  5. I freaking love my SUV (I drive a Highlander Hybrid). Maybe it's because I'm short, I like being "tall" at least from my car vantage point! And I have to say 2017 safety features are so much better than my prior car (2011) with the cameras and warnings and such . Definitely prevented multiple collisions for me.

  6. Congratulations on your NEW CAR! How exciting! I was SO UPSET at the scratches, but then so thankful for Ben being there with his buffing skillz. WHEW!

If my mom were here, she would tell you of the one and only new car she ever bought, and how the hubcaps were stolen THAT NIGHT when we went out to dinner to celebrate.

Since she is not here, I will tell you of my husband's reaction when I told him a rock hit our windshield and chipped it on the freeway when it was pretty new.

  7. Impressed by your hassle-free buying experience and extra-extra points and a feminist badge for doing it by yourself! I hope it has the 4-WD you mentioned wanting a while ago.

  8. Congrats!! Woot woot!!

We just paid off our car yesterday. So now we have two paid-off cars. We're living the dream!! (And probably going car shopping this weekend because our older car is barely drivable at this point.)

  9. Listen: take it from someone who just bought her first SUV. YOU DO NOT WANT WHITE. They are ALL white and the first time you try to find your white SUV in a parking lot - especially a parking lot full of other parents - you will wander around for 20 minutes going, "No, it's not that white SUV, no, it's not that one either......"

  10. CONGRATULATIONS! An end of an era indeed. We have two paid off cars, two Subarus, and T has been softy meowing about getting a new car (an Audi), me: over my dead body. I like to not have a car payment. We will see who wins :)
