5 on a Friday: Things I plan to buy for my fall/winter wardrobe (42/52)

Ben and I cleaned out our closets last weekend and got rid of 3 lawn care bags worth of clothes that no longer spark joy. I personally went from 18 pairs of cheap jeans to 10 pairs of cheap jeans. I tossed 2 on sight and tried the other 16 on. I ended up keeping 3 pairs of size 4 jeans, 4 pairs of size 6 jeans, and 3 pairs of size 8 jeans. WHICH, WHAT THE EFF. WHY can’t I just be a size and always be that size in every brand? SO FRUSTRATING.

I did keep a pair of skinny jeans, but they are high waisted and have a raw hem, so at least that’s two things on-trend??

Ok. From this purge, I realized there are a (very few) things I need to round out my winter and fall wardrobe:

1. TIGHTS. I love wearing skirts and dresses, and cold weather is no exception, I do need some more tights, though, to make this happen.
*Today I am wearing a pair of Dorothy’s jazz tights. This is silly.

2. A white t-shirt. I used to have a Madewell v-neck and a Target scoop neck, but neither of them was in my dresser when I cleaned it out. I am on the hunt. (I feel like this is a job for Nordstrom Rack perhaps, and I might also want a long-sleeved option…)

3. A longer cardigan I can wear with jeans. I have a cream one from Stitch Fix, a cropped gray leopard print one from LOFT, and a fun print one from Old Navy, but I need one more in a neutral color. Pink maybe? I used to have 2 pink ones, and I have no idea what happened to them, although I suspect bad laundering.

4. A long denim skirt. This is a tricky item for someone with 5 kids to buy. Denim skirt. Tons of kids. Fundie vibes. But! I see these everywhere, and they’re super cute. Madewell maybe?

5. A pair of shoes in between high heels and Uggs- this is a very real void in my wardrobe. I have one pair of leopard booties and one pair of (really old and maybe too cheap for someone my age to be wearing) Old Navy booties, plus tennis shoes. I want something… else? But I don’t know what that would be.

I have visions of a mom uniform for cold weather that’s basically jeans but with something cute and polished on top and pretty jewelry and fun shoes.

So far I have the jeans part down

I bought 2 pairs of jeans this weekend (before I cleaned out my closet and realized how many I had), a sweater dress from American Eagle, a super cute beat-up-looking sweatshirt from American Eagle, a cozy pink waffle shirt from Old Navy, and a pair of overalls because the straps on my ancient Gap ones broke last fall, and I have missed overalls in my life. And! CLEARANCE RACKS ARE TH BEST— I only spent $75 for these 6 pieces!

Are you on the hunt for any wardrobe needs? Bought anything cute lately?

(Speaking of buying things. My Target order from yesterday. Shout out to Suzanne and a universe of missing spoons).

I am always on the hunt for things I (mostly) do not need lol. But my absolute favorite place to try and find them is on TheRealReal. SO FUN

  2. You had a productive weekend - cleaning out a closet, trying on so many pairs of jean, AND shopping? Well done. My closet is begging to be thinned out. I hate tossing stuff and then looking for said thing, so I am a hanger-on-er.

I could use a black cardigan. Most of my jeans are still skinny jeans. I still love them, so I'm embracing that. I did buy a pair of crazy soft beige pants on clearance when I shopped with my older girls in Lake Geneva. They're kind of like dressy sweat pants, if there's a term for them - I'm not sure what it is. I love a white t-shirt, both long and short sleeve, but the armpits don't last forever.

  4. Yessssss all the Target spoons!

If you are looking at Madewell for your denim skirt (so cute on other people; when I wear one, it's giving Frumpy Teacher vibes), try their white Ts. I have multiple because they are so light and comfy and versatile.

I am also on the hunt for, let's see, elevated casual/slightly dressy tops that I can wear with jeans. This is a constant need in my wardrobe as I can NEVER find anything I like. I think I have two blouses I love and would buy on repeat but they are super old and I haven't found anything comparable in years.

Also I am very slowly edging away from the skinny jeans into more trendy fits (sob!). Am a late adopter and I also have so very many skinny jeans it hurts to think of dumping them.

  5. Oh goodness on jeans sizing. WHY??? A few months ago I went to Macys and thought I might get a new pair of Levis. Classic bootcut for this hippy girl (as in, hips). Size 4. I took off my size 4 classic bootcut and tried to get another pair of size 4 classic bootcut on, and they would not get past my knees. Needless to say, I left angry without any jeans. I also have size 6 and size 8 of different brands. Who the hell knows with jeans.

I bought a pretty scarf the other day, and I think it would be pretty to wear kind of as a top under a solid colored cardigan, so I may be looking for a couple of those next time I'm out shopping. I tend to not buy a lot of clothes, but I could use a few items for sure. (My closet is full to bursting, but I don't wear much of it. I need to get in there and do some real damage.)

    1. GOD I feel this. I went through an ENTIRE MALL with my daughter last year. All the jeans weren't even in the same place in the same store! I finally found a pair she liked when we were practically back out in the parking lot, but man, what a time and soul suck.

  6. I want to find a pair of “sneaker boots”! I keep seeing some tan leather ones on the OluKai ads on Facebook that are along the style I want. I like the idea of having something in between an actual “boot” and as casual as a sneaker. These have a sneaker sole but look like a little bootie. I think they would be super versatile and could be a nice option for WI fall through spring! And could dress up or down…

I need to replace a pair of black pointed toe Rothy’s and then I would like some new sweaters and yet I do not want to go shopping. Ha.

  8. My wardrobe needs a massive overhaul. I seriously feel like I have nothing to wear, and keep wearing the same things over and over again. Today my daughter and I went to Marshalls, where she got several shirts and I got a pair of (desperately needed) shorts. At least it was a step in the right direction!

  9. One of the grade one teachers called me a Cool Librarian because I was wearing Docs last week, but she also seemed totally shocked like she thought they weren't Even a Thing anymore, so I'm not entirely sure how to take it.
