THE NORTHERN LIGHTS!

WE SAW THE NORTHERN LIGHTS LAST WEEK.

YOU GUYS.

I have wanted to see them FOREVER! And then! IT HAPPENED.

I have a panda at the zoo level of excitement for this. And! THE AURORA IS NEVER CALLED BACK FROM DIPLOMATIC LOAN. Even if Norway gets, like, really mad at us.

I was minding my own business scrolling through Facebook (LOL— except when you are scrolling through FB, you are LITERALLY minding everyone else’s business) when I noticed people near me posting northern lights pics. I mentioned this to Ben, and he volunteered to drive a little way down the road and see if it was dark enough to see them. He came back 15 minutes later and said he couldn't see them but his phone could.

Cooper was intrigued, so he and Dorothy and I jumped in the car and pulled off on a very creepy road by a horse farm to look at the sky. We could sort of see pink spots with our naked eyes, and our cameras saw light green and some pink. We looked at where the pink seemed to be coming from and realized that was right by a park near our house that's surrounded by prairie and not very many houses, so we took a chance that they sky would be more visible there.

AND IT WAS! YOU GUYS!

I texted a friend who lives near the park and has a kid Dorothy’s age and an older kid on a couple of Dorothy's team dances, and they joined us, too, all of the kids in pajamas. We laid on the ground and marveled for awhile, and it was MAGICAL.

The sky moved, and we saw pink, purple, and green and took unbelievable photos and said out loud several times how lucky we felt. A regular suburban miracle.

Coop took this shot, and I blew it up to frame-- love it so much

This was our view from the horse farm-- I am so glad we followed the pink splotches
IS THIS REAL LIFE???

  4. WOW. These photos are unbelievable. And to think I wouldn't even know this happened, if it weren't for my blogging friends.

  5. Amazing!!! You really had some great views! The Northern Lights were invisible to my naked eye, although they did show up a bit in photos. But nothing as spectacular as what you caught! Love that the whole family got to see them!

  6. WOW, how amazing! It does make me feel a lot better to know that phones are better at capturing it than our eyes, because somehow that helps me feel less FOMO. It's such a drive to get away from light pollution here, and friends who have tried who have not had luck, which makes me feel better about being lazy and staying in my bed.

We were in Alaska last August, and it was depressing to know that it was going on right above all of the stupid rain clouds. Sigh.

  7. I knew nothing of this until after the fact, and I'm now sorry (for the first time ever) that I didn't scroll Facebook that day. Ha. The pics are amazing. So glad you managed to seek them out. What a great memory, and friends joined you. Magical indeed.
