I love seeing new names in the comments section, so I thought I'd back up and say HELLO to anyone new around here.
First of all, SORRY FOR THE TYPOS. My eyes are getting worse and worse, and I can never find glasses, and I never really learned to type properly because I am a gen x-er.
OK-- here are the quick facts:
I have five kids: Harry(18), a college freshman; Jack (16), a junior in high school; Cooper (13), a 7th-grader; Dorothy (11), a 6th-grader; and Minnie (4), a preschooler.
We have a brand new puppy named Annabel. She's a cavapoo and was born on 8/24.
I am married to Ben, my high school and college sweetheart (we met at speech camp when we were 14 and 15). He is an academic, too, but an administrator, and he works out of town 3 days (2 nights) a week.
I had Harry and Jack when I was getting my PhD and the other 3 after I had settled into my full-time teaching faculty job.
We generally have... a lot... going on, and I like to use this blog to complain about... all of it.
I write about money on Mondays because we are trying to be smarter about how we use ours. Every month, I post a reading round up because I have made an effort since 2013 to read at least 100 books a year. I am a huge feminist and probably politically to the left of you because I am politically to the left of everyone I know even in a super lefty area of the state. I study reproductive justice and am doing a lot of thinking about gender and politics these days. I want to be a novelist and have been working on a book about adult mean girl friendships in the WI suburbs forever. I try to comment on blogs for 20 minutes a day and also sometimes reply to comments on this blog but I am bad at that and getting better. I always want to be thinner and younger looking, color my hair at home, am contemplating botox and maybe new boobs, am very anxious most of the time and generally always think I have a fatal ailment of some sort. I AM SO FUN AT PARTIES YOU GUYS.
Anyway, welcome.
I am one of those new readers and am really enjoying your blog! Thanks for this intro post!
ReplyDeletewelcome :)
DeleteWait...you're working on a book?? Has this come up before? It FEELS LIKE NEW INFORMATION, Sarah!
ReplyDeleteugh-- i don't like to talk about it. but maybe that's part of the problem?
DeleteMy thoughts exactly. but then I usually miss a bunch of posts.
DeleteI appreciate the introduction even though I’ve been reading your blog for a while and lurking until now. I admire your willingness to add a puppy to everything else you have going on.
ReplyDeletethanks :)
DeleteBoobs are overrated! I of course am flat chested, but it has served me well in running and sports, so there is that. I definitely wanted bigger ones at one point, but don't think I would have ever had surgery! My friend has a cavapoo and they are a lot! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteshe is definitely more energetic than Beatrix-- but that's a low bar
DeleteI think an interesting question to ask people is what they would get cosmetic surgery on. I mean, a lot of women say boobs or a facelift (I personally would get my teeth fixed because my smile is atrocious), but what would men say? I don't know.
ReplyDeleteoooooh would men even say anything?
DeleteWell the novel and new boobs are news to me!! Botox is great. I don’t care about my boobs (or lack thereof) one iota, lol. I would fix my ears if anything (they stick out but I have long hair so generally who cares).
ReplyDeletewe need to text re: botox-- I have questions...
Deletesend them along!!
Deleteaaaaaaw thank you
ReplyDeleteAnnabel is so cute! I found your blog through Sarah Hart-Unger and The Shubox. I have loved reading about your life! I dream of being an academic and getting a PhD one day. While our day to day could not be more different your writing brings me joy. One of my goals is to connect with the few blogs I follow consistently so writing this comment is my first step! Thanks for the re-introduction!
ReplyDeleteAwww, thank you for the lovely comment
DeleteSarah, I try so hard to compliment people on things other than their appearance, and this has big boomer energy, but you look SO YOUNG AND PRETTY even if you didn't have five kids, and the fact that you do is just *mind blown*. Anyway, back to my regularly scheduled trying to be more evolved.
ReplyDeleteI missed that you have a dog now?! Silly me, he is super cute!
ReplyDeleteI knew some of the info but it was helpful for me to put ages to your kids.
ReplyDeleteWow, that sounds like a lot going on! And HELLO! I found you through NaBloPoMo
ReplyDeletehi! I am a new reader, found you through SHU. I SO MISS old-school blogs, and I love love love yours. And you are *not* to the left of me, which I also love. Sending big hugs today.
ReplyDeletep.s. I get a small amount of Botox and love it. It's pricey and isn't, like, a fountain of youth, but I think it makes me look 4 years younger (41 instead of 45), which is perfect.
I agree - you always look so cute and young and I don't think you need to change a thing. I'm really flat chested - like REALLY, and I guess I'm lucky that that's never bothered me. Great intro. I didn't realize you and Ben met that long ago. If you met at speech camp, does that mean - you didn't live near each other/go to the same high school? I died laughing at 'I'm also really fun at parties.'
ReplyDeleteRegarding boobs...I was a C cup when I was thin, and a D cup now, and it SUCKS. My friend had hers done and hated it. Clothes fit differently. Of course, I don't know what you're planning. I might get a boob job where I just got rid of the droop from inching up on 60, so they don't annoy me so damn much. But bigger ones? UGH. No. And I LOVED Bibliomama's comment, because I feel the same way. I don't like to focus on people's looks, but you are sassy and beautiful and fun and sexy and ALL OF IT.
ReplyDeleteI’m a newish reader! I’m enjoying your blog especially the book recommendations! And everything really :)
ReplyDeleteI did not know you were working on a book! So cool!
ReplyDeleteIf I could have any kind of plastic surgery, I would get liposuction of my stomach area. It is quite bad right now, prob due to being on steroids and approaching menopause. Sob. I try not to think about it but if we are being honest, it weighs on me (physically and mentally). But my boobs? I give 0 f’s about them. I hated having a bigger chest when nursing and pregnant! But I know many feel differently!
You met when you were 14 and 15!!! That's so sweet!
ReplyDeleteIf I could get plastic surgery it would be...hair plugs? I don't even know. A wig? A WHOLE NEW HEAD OF HAIR? Well, I guess that isn't something that really exists (the wig does but honestly) but it's something I have always been dissatisfied with.
You forgot to add "and I am funny". Loved reading this re-intro :)
