GAH YOU GUYS.
Since September, we have had to fix our dishwasher (about $300), our freezer and ice maker (another $300), our above-the-stove-microwave (right around-- you guessed it-- $300-- and we ended up replacing it because the last time it was serviced was 5 years ago, and our favorite handyman recommended replacing it then), and our garage door (more about that tomorrow). That's like $1500 in random home repairs, if anyone is playing along at home. Also, I shattered THE BACK of my iPhone.
Plus, also, you know, THE DOG, who is not super cheap. $150 every time she goes to the vet, plus she cost money to buy, plus we had some dog stuff start up costs.
And then! We got a 5-figure dance bill. Plus diving is a monthly expense with meets on top, and there's preschool tuition. At least we don't pay college tuition again until January and there's only one kid in college for the rest of this year and next?
LIFE IS EXPENSIVE, is what I am saying.
I stopped tracking for a second there at the end of the month because I didn't even want to write the numbers down (somewhere between garage door and microwave), but! I also did not buy a darn thing. And before I started tracking things, I would have been like FUCK IT and headed to Ulta to assuage my feelings with more spending. So, I think we are still heading in the right direction.
Not a costume, just a regular school day:
I guess good things come in threes, and bad or expensive things come in...fives? When it rains, it pours. I have to say, aside from the five figure dance bill, the appliances are not too bad, as in my experience, I feel like $1000 is the minimum number. As soon as I bought my house, the hot water heater died, and it was $1300. Then the tree in the backyard dropped a branch in my neighbor's yard so I had it trimmed. Another $1600. The list goes on, but I feel like I can't get anything home related for less than $1000.

ReplyDeleteYikes. That sucks. Big time. 5 figure dance bill? That made me choke. Holy cow. Does that bill cover both girls? I feel like Minnie is now enrolled in dancing classes. No? When it rains is pours - so true. Well done avoiding Ulta though.

ReplyDeleteThe dance bill -wowza. But remember you love to watch the girls dance and have fun, so I bet the pain will ebb. (Maybe that's why they bill you once? So you'll have a year of fun practices and beautiful dances - you won't remember the cost.)

ReplyDeleteThe appliance part really sucks, though. It’s tough to know whether it’s worth it to repair it or get a new one. We went through that with our fridge in 2020. They tried repairing it something like 3 times and then we gave up and bought a new one. Which we should have done in the first place!

Gymnastics, ice skating, jiu jitsu, piano… trees taken out in the back yard because they were dead and threatened to fall on neighbors property… PA road trip to Lancaster county this week. It never ends.
FIVE figures - damn!! Trying to think if gymnastics would reach 5 figures with all the monthly payments combined and I don't think so, but close. WOW. I guess you can think of it kind of like a mini "school" tuition.

I can add a 300€ bill to your list as we had a flat tire on Tuesday. And it's not enough to change one tire no lets make it two because otherwise the electronics are being messed up. WTF... Sigh.
OK your dance bill selfishly made me feel better about how much we pay for my daughter's competitive cheer team practice/competitions, etc. But Dorothy does loooove dance and it's so good for her so I get it. I hope she does too! (how lucky she is to have such supportive parents).
ReplyDeleteBig bills can be a bit astonishing, but I think dance is 100% a case of "it costs what it costs." You love it, the girls love it, and it...costs what it costs! Even though it does hurt. Ouch.
ReplyDeleteArgh. Owning a home is such a money sink. And it definitely does seem to come in waves. Hopefully this means you won't have any expensive repairs in the foreseeable future!
Wow on all of it, but mostly the dance bill. I'm guessing Dorothy goes almost every day, right? Does this include Minnie? How often does she go? My niece was in ballet from really little through high school, and I suspect the bill was pretty high. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteOur washer door broke, which we could maybe fix but it would be at least $1,000, and we would still have a 16 year old washing machine, so we went to get a new one and ended up with a $3,500 washer and dryer, and let me tell you there is no Ulta in my budget right now. Though I did go buy myself 2 new sweaters a couple of weeks ago, so I guess I'm guilty.
I am breaking out in HIVES... I hope you both have BIG incomes and you have a lot of sinking funds for these home expenses. Oof. Life really is expensive... and Mini is so cute in her costume :)
