Ugh-- I stopped tracking mid week last week when the wheels sort of fell off. Nothing fun, you guys. A parking ticket. A note from a COLLECTIONS AGENCY because BEN AND COOPER did not pay a PA turnpike toll going to dive nats last summer (SO STOOPID), prescription food for the dog (we missed a call from the vet about her PARASITES TWO WEEKS AGO ARE YOU KIDDING ME), lunch account payments because the kids hate the planet and will spend like $40 a week on single-serve plastic water bottles--even though they pack their lunches and have lost ALL OF OUR cheap Gatorade sports bottles AT SCHOOL, preschool fundraiser winter decor, a big choreography fee for Dorothy's dance trio, some holidays gifts at long last, sportsball fees because it is high school dive season-- etc etc etc.
Note: I bought Minnie the horse stable/ manor house thing she fell in love with the Amazon toy catalog and has been talking about for WEEKS. And then she changed her allegiance to the Barbie Dream House the literal DAY IT ARRIVED. We told her maybe she could wait and see if she still wants that on her birthday, but she is pretty passionate. **eye roll**
Ben swears that we are saving a ton of money because we aren't buying stupid crap every day (Annabel got 2 new sweaters last week tho), and I am choosing to trust him blindly (not smart if you see the turnpike thing above).
One AWESOME thing I bought and DO NOT regret is THIS shampoo and THIS conditioner. Yes, this is the same company who makes the moisturizer I love, and the hair stuff? IS ALSO AWESOME. I had a sample that I brought with me to Peoria. I used it after the ball and fell asleep with wet hair and woke up with a GLOSSY MANE. It was like the hair fairy visited me in my sleep. IT'S SO GOOD YOU GUYS. I went straight to Blue Mercury to buy it the second we got back to Madison.
A MAJOR change I have seen since we started being aware of the money we hemorrhage on the daily is the amount of take out, fast food, bar food, etc, we eat on a regular basis. That is to say, we almost never eat out at all, and I don't miss it even a little bit (probably because if I do miss something, we eat it. We had lunch at the golf course bar a couple weekends ago, and it was perfect. We have enjoyed some sushi take out nights, and we have gone on a sandwich run here and there, DQ on the way home from diving occasionally). Mostly, though, we eat the fridge, and it hasn't even really been a hard adjustment or felt like a sacrifice. And! We are definitely making better nutritional choices.
This week, I want to buy one major gift for each kid and figure out the rest of our winter break travel arrangements. **crosses fingers** I am also pledging to write everything down in my calendar even if the numbers make me feel yucky.
"Annabel got two sweaters tho" is amazing. Also would love to see those sweaters. Last week I also hemorrhaged money: dog grooming, vet appointment for annual checkup that ended in lice treatment and drops for ear yeast infection because sending the dog to the kennel for three weeks is akin to dropping off a child at daycare in the height of germ season, and also I bought shapewear. More on that later but I cleaned out my closet of all ill-fitting clothes and now I need new clothes.
ReplyDeletepoor rex!!!!
DeleteWe hemorrhaged money on paying off the credit cards. Booo-riiing... But necessary. Also: 409 for 10 lessons of jiu jitsu, a lunch at Friendly's after skates, a few gifts for L's 7th birthday, dinner before the play on Friday night. The play= $60 a pop.
ReplyDeletelife is sp expensive
DeleteWell, if it makes you feel any better, I once got a library fine sent to a collection agency. I think it goes without saying, this is when the kids were little.
ReplyDeleteGeez- life is expensive.
LOL-- I can see that happening to me. We almost couldn;t buy our first house because Ben had a video store late fee form college in collections that he didn't know about.
DeleteWe got a ticket for a toll we missed while driving out of state for Curly's basketball and I was so confused. You are not alone. We don't eat out often, almost never and I feel like that is an automatic way to feel good about other expenditures. The Barbie Dream House thing, DANG. Did you give her the Amazon horse house, or did you buy it for a holiday gift and not give it to her yet? We will probably be charged for a missed doc appointment for Reg. Long story, but this is the ump-teenth time, and why can't we get the reminders/why does the universe not want us to see this neurologist? (sort of important, sort of routine in order to keep getting med refills).
ReplyDeleteugh so annoying re: doctor!! the house is for xmas, but I already GOT it, so I don't want to return it now.
DeleteOhhhh I might need that conditioner. I've been SEARCHING for a great one...
ReplyDeleteit's really great!
DeleteI went to Target w/ the boys yesterday to buy gifts for a Christmas donation program at church. The woman in front of me had a completely full cart of groceries and the total came to over $400. I thought to myself - this is probably what it's like for Sarah to go to Target! We spend about $400 on groceries in a month! All that is to say that life is very expensive, especially for bigger kids and families with a number of bigger kids!
ReplyDeleteI spent quite a bit on new dresses but will return 2 of them. I really needed more work dresses, though. I had to warn Phil not to lose his mind when he saw the charge on our credit card statement.
I spent $375 at Costco this weekend and just got normal stuff **sob**
DeleteOur library has abolished fines, BUT you do get charged for the book if you keep it too long, unless you bring it back and then the charge is refunded, BUT they do threaten collection agencies. I do the walk of shame on the regular. At least Ben was driving and could make some kind of outlaw story out of the fine - I just read myself into debt.
ReplyDeleteAnnabelle got two sweaters, lol, perfect.
I go into denial about how much I'm spending at Christmas every year. It would be a good exercise to write all the numbers down and endure the yuckiness.
ugh-- I made a spreadsheet like 5 years ago and it was brutal.
DeleteOops, that was me, Allison/bibliomama
ReplyDeleteSarah, you would DIE living in my house. I buy like $3.99 shampoo, whatever is on sale, and use coconut oil and coconut oil ONLY for my face. Though waking up to a glossy mane sounds very tempting...
ReplyDeletewell, that's what I buy for everyone ELSE lol
DeleteThe last two months have been just a money leak like crazy. The cat's radioactive treatment! A mouse in the house that caused us to toss hundreds of dollars of food and equipment in the kitchen! Shoring up my winter work wardrobe! I just pretend I have unlimited money, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI'm also laughing at Lisa's grocery budget. I don't know how she feeds four people on that. We spend $700-800 a month on groceries for two people. *sigh*
We found a dead mouse ON OUR FRONT PORCH and now I am just like DREADING finding them INSIDE omg.
DeleteFood sensitivities/allergies really drive up grocery bills. My son's first year, he was allergic to everything: dairy/soy/nuts/eggs/sesame. Money we saved by not being able to eat out got funneled into our weird allergy free whole paycheck grocery bill.
DeleteCrap, now I really want to try that shampoo and conditioner and maybe moisturizer and ZOWEE that's a lot of money, so I'm not sure if I will. Tempting though! I am almost out of conditioner and was trying to decide whether to go with Olaplex or Figure 18, and now there's this wrinkle. They do have a subscribe and save option, though, and I always like that...
