Farewell, Fall Semester

If you subtract the ENTIRE MONTH OF NOVEMBER because I was sick and anxious about being sick one I even realized that I was sick and not mired in a terrible life circumstance, this has been a LOVELY semester.

I expected to hate Ben working out of town much more than I actually ended up hating it. I think because he was SO unhappy at his last job, and that job had TERRIBLE hours and expected a really effed up work/life balance, that seeing him SO HAPPY and pretty relaxed despite quite a bit of professional duty and stress, has been lovely and has made everything feel lighter.

It was very easy to settle into a routine, and even though things are busy busy busy, I am able to really cherish my last afternoons home with a preschooler and also work a ton.

All of that is to say, I had my very last class and my very last long Monday on campus for the semester, and I sort of already mis my cozy little routine. Remind me of this next semester, won't you, when I have not left the house in weeks (I am teaching online and only have a few staff meetings).

Minnie and I saw Moana the other day (speaking of loving life with a preschooler), and we were the only people in the theater, which was wild. Also MOANA DIES in this movie, and I realize it is a spoiler, but I wish I had known because I was CAUGHT OFF GUARD. I teared up, and Minnie goes, People die in movies all the time, Mom, Think about Darth Vader. Thank goodness I have Minnie to care for me in my old age. Also Moana becomes a demigod, so it's all fine.

Speaking of demi!! Minnie was telling me about her dance class last week, and she goes, I need to say a bad word but just one. Mom, we did a dummy pliĆ©. I DIED. I mean first of all, our whole family cusses like sailors, so dummy? Not even in the realm of bad words. Must be something she hears at school. Second, she was VERY RELIEVED to hear it was demi-pliĆ©.

Annabel really likes being brushed (except when she tries to eat the brush-- she really is kind of nippy, it turns out)
And I like brushing her because she gets ridiculously fluffy. The SMILE!!
CHEESE (Minnie loves helping me bake, btw)
So far, we have made kind of gross gingerbread, absolutely perfect gingerbread, and peanut butter blossoms. On tap for this week? More pb blossoms and scotcheroos.

Minnie also insisted that we make cupcakes for dessert last night. And orange frosting.

Very holiday, yes? (no-- the answer is obviously no).

  1. Moana dies?
I am unlikely to see it but still, good to know.
I'm so glad the semester went so well! I wondered how it would be, Ben working out of town. Glad it went well.

Moana dies?!? I'll wait to see it at home. No need for me to cry in a theater.
End of the semester here as well- just grading finals and one make up final I shouldn't be giving but I'm a softie.

  3. I haven't seen the first Moana. I have tried to talk the boys into watching it and they haven't wanted to! They are so picky about movies!

I'm glad that Ben working out of town has been manageable for you guys! I'm sure it helps that you've got some bigger kids to help out and Minnie seems like she is pretty easy to have around since you can work while she's in the house. I'm going about 6-8 days/month and I will say that it has been REALLY challenging for us but we're fully in the young kid stage with kids that mess with each other so much...

    1. OMG Lisa you need to see Moana!!! It's sooo good. Lin Manuel Miranda did the music. I think it's my favorite animated movie ever. Go by yourself!

Also, I am SO GLAD for the heads up about Moana dying!!!! Now I just have to decide if my kid will appreciate the spoiler or hate me for it???

    1. I am a little worried that a robot wrote the whole script, honestly. But I liked it!

  6. Your fam swears like sailors too? Phew, I thought it was just us (or mostly me). The first thing 10 year old Mini said to me ages ago when I told the kids I was gonna try babysitting in our house was that I couldn't say bad words anymore. Hee hee. I love the dummy pile confusion/fear of it being a bad word. I'm so glad you enjoyed your semester and here's hoping that the online semester has unexpected perks and that you get in a groove with those. Glad Ben's happier at his job. Work /life balance is so key.

    1. she becomes a demigod, so she's still THERE, but yeah, it was sad. Also, the first one is just lovely, and the music is great

  9. I had to read my husband Minnie's response about Moana dying and Darth Vader, so classic.

Regarding nippy puppies, my daughter volunteered at a shelter, and they taught the volunteers that when a dog gets mouthy, make a little "AIEE!" noise like a puppy might make if they were hurt. Not big, just quick and then move on. They don't WANT to hurt you, and they learn pretty quickly.

  10. Moana DIES? We loved the first movie but I had heard the second was underwhelming, but geez, thank goodness I know for if I do see it.
When Eve was little she thought 'shuttle' and 'shithole' were the same word, which made talking about space risky. We also swear like longshoremen, continuing the long and proud tradition started by my parents.

  11. THEY KILL MOANA?!!? That's insaaaane. I love how matter-of-fact Minnie is about that plot point. I need to know more about how people are feeling about this. Dang!!

  13. Moana dies???!!! What in the Disney is that?! Thank you for the heads up - I am amazed I haven't heard this actually before now! We were planning to go see it over break, but now I'm not sure my sensitive kiddo and I can take it. We were a mess at Wild Robot, and I knew it would probably be sad, but for some reason I was not expecting this turn of events for Moana!
